The Staunton Augusta Art Cent stanley quencher er announces that it is now receiving applications from artists of fine art and fine craft interested in participating in the 45th annual Art in the Park at Gypsy Hill, a two-day festival of quality fine art and fine craft every Memorial Day weekend and scheduled for May 29 and 30, 2011.The site of the art festival, Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton, Virginia, is an exceptionally beautiful municipal park which provides a tree-lined, intimate setting for artists and artisans as well as area residents and tourists. Visitors linger as they admire the artwork, chat with the artists, listen to live music coming from the bandstand every hour, and enjoy food provided by a variety of vendors. Young aspiring artists participate in a childrens art activity area.This year marks the 45th anniversary of Art in the Park and the 50th anniversary of its producer, the Staunton Augusta Art Center, a 501 c 3 non-profit arts organization. But those outcomes sound mundane compared to what happened in the aftermath of a 2017 conference at Washington and Lee University.After meeting at a conference on the ethics of acquiring cultural heritage objects in March of that year, two presenters 鈥?artist and activist Joy Lynn Davis and Erin Thompson, an art crime professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice 鈥?began a collaboration that would ultimately lead to an FBI investigation, a seizure from a Dallas museum, and the return of a sacred Nepali sculpture to its home almost 40 years after it was looted.
